Based on some scholars, the Black Stone was exactly the same stone that Islamic custom describes as greeting Muhammad in advance of his prophethood. This triggered a debate about whether the Black Stone's greeting comprised genuine speech or simply a sound, and adhering to that, whether or not the stone was a residing creature or an inanimate item.
